Short CV

I was a PhD candidate at ETH Zurich at the Institute for Pervasive Computing lead by Prof. Friedemann Mattern. In addition I worked as a researcher at the Bits to Energy Lab, a joint research initiative of the ETH Zurich and the University of St. Gallen. During my time at ETH, I had the honor to spend three months as a visiting researcher in the Sustainable Systems Lab at Stanford University. Before starting the PhD program in June 2011 I had worked for almost three years as a development engineer at Robert Bosch GmbH (Corporate Research and Advance Engineering) in the field of the Internet of Things and Services.

In May 2008 I finished my studies of Computer Science (major) and Business Administration (minor) at University of Tübingen in Germany. During my studies I spent one year at the University of Oregon (USA), which was sponsored by Fulbright and the State of Baden-Württemberg. I also worked multiple years as a student research assistant at the group of Prof. Klaus Wehrle (now: Chair of Communication and Distributed Systems at RWTH Aachen University). In his group I accomplished both my student thesis and my diploma thesis in the field of Computer Networking.

Research Interests

My research lies in the intersection of Smart Energy, Machine Learning, and the Internet of Things. In particular, this includes:
  • Sensing and analyzing data from smart devices such as smart electricity meters.
  • Using methods from machine learning and data mining to develop services on top of electricity consumption data.
  • Developing architectures and infrastructures for such data-centric applications.
Some of my most recent projects can be found open source. Project CLASS, for instance, contains our work on how to automatically reveal household characteristics from smart meter data. Another project, NILM-Eval, contains a framework to evaluate non-intrusive load monitoring algorithms including reference implementations of state-of-the-art NILM algorithms (have a look at the Smart Meter Services project page and the ECO Data Set for more information).
