Short CV

I am a Research Assistant and PhD student in the Distributed Systems Group from ETH Zurich under the supervision of Prof. Friedemann Mattern. Before joining the PhD program in October 2014, I obtained my master's degree in Computer Science from EPFL. My master thesis was entitled Wireless Indoor Localization using Smartphones and the project was supervised by Prof. Patrick Thiran (EPFL) and Yvonne-Anne Pignolet (ABB Corporate Research Center). I also hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

During my master studies I did two internships, one at Microsoft as a Software Development Engineer and one at ABB Corporate Research Center where I worked on my master thesis.

My current interests are at the intersection of multiple areas or research: computer vision, machine learning, distributed systems and human computer interaction. I am interested in developing intelligent systems that can seamlessly assist users in their day to day life. There is a certain shift in the way in which people use their computers. Many years ago, everyone had one personal computer that was able to perform many different taks. To some extent, this is still true today, however people start to acquire and carry with them many "computers". Nowadays, it is quite common for people to own smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and in some cases, even smart glasses (like Google Glass). Most of these devices can already offer interesting applications (e.g. fitness tracking), but all of them work most of the times independent from each other. We believe that by combining multiple devices and applying state of the art techniques from machine learning, computer vision and others, we can create more intelligent systems and new ways to interact with them.

Student projects

I am always looking for talented students with background in distributed systems, visual computing or machine learning. Electrical engineers with experience in image/signal processing are also welcome.
