Cabo Verde is a very young republic sitting on an extension of the Sahara into the Atlantic. It is a very dry, warm and windy place, a good combination for someone who wants a bit of sun during the european winter. As can be seen from the map, not only water is scarce, names are too. Three towns are called Tarrafal and two are called Preguiça. Maybe this is naming preguiça. (preguiça=laziness in portuguese).
Our hotel was in Sal, very near Santa Maria. The archipealago is about 600 km west from Senegal. |
Ponto do Sinó, completely bare, except for this pathetic little tower |

The Crioula hotel was rated and priced as a 5-star hotel. Its quality, rooms, service, etc. were hardly 3-star |
All in all, it was a good trip. The Caboverdeans are very nice and friendly people, the weather is good (for us, at least), warm and sunny continuously, and the beaches excepcional. People who have use for wind over the water will have an additional plus. If you also like undrinkable water, mediocre food, minimal noise insulation, 2nd-rate animators at 180 decibels, the "runs" due to dubious food, then the Crioula is your best choice.
